Municipal Law

MUNICIPAL LAW, CIVIL RIGHTS, AND CONSTITUTIONAL LAW

SKH&M has enjoyed a long-term relationship with numerous local governments on Long Island and the State of New York. Our attorneys have represented elected and government officials and regularly provide those officials with legal advice on significant questions affecting government, including civil service, civil rights, labor and employment matters, land use and zoning. As part of SKH&M’s civil rights litigation practice, we represent municipalities and municipal employees in federal court in connection with claims arising under Federal Civil Rights acts, including 42 U.S.C. §§ 1981, 1983, 1985 and 1986. We also address corresponding constitutional issues under the First, Fourth, Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments of the Constitution of the United States. Our focus in this area of practice includes:

  • Municipal law
  • Police misconduct
  • False arrest and imprisonment
  • Employment discrimination
  • First Amendment issues
  • Statutory construction
  • Due process
  • Municipal Land Use
